Board Meeting Highlights - May 15, 2019
Proceeds of Crime Report
The proceeds of crime legislation in Canada has been designed to combat organized and serious crimes by giving the judicial system the ability to seize and forfeit property used to facilitate the activities of organized crime groups and related criminal activities.
For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019, York Regional Police turned over a total of $833,077 in cash and assets from illicit activities to the federal government’s Seized Property Management Directorate, the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General and the York Regional Police Services Board.
Federal and provincial legislation allow for the disbursement of the proceeds of crime to victim compensation, cost recovery and grants to police services. After all the costs associated with the management of seized assets are paid, the jurisdictions involved share in the net proceeds. Between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2019, York Regional Police received $14 million in grant funding and $180,000 of that total was from the Proceeds of Crime grant. Those funds were used to operate lawful access equipment and to combat human trafficking. Please see here for a copy of the report.
