About the Board
The Regional Municipality of York Police Service Board is a seven-member civilian Board that oversees and governs the York Regional Police. It is comprised of one member, who serves as the Head of Municipal Council (or if the head chooses not to or is ineligible, another member of municipal council); three members are appointed by resolution of Regional Council (one who is neither a member of municipal council or an employee of the municipality), and three by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
Under section 10 of the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019 (CSPA), police service boards are responsible for ensuring adequate and effective policing is provided in the area for which they have policing responsibility, and in accordance with the needs of the population in the area and having regard for the diversity of the population in the area.
The Board represents the public interest, providing civilian oversight and governance of the York Regional Police, its organizational performance, and its activities in the course of delivering police services to the community.
